THE INSTITUTE FOR EXPRESSIVE ANALYSIS PRESENTS

INVITES YOU TO A SCIENTIFIC MEETING

  When Worlds Collide

Friday, October 1st, 2010
7:00 – 9:30 pm
NPAP / 40 West 13th Street, New York, NY

"Guess Who's Going to Dinner?
On the Arrival of the Uninvited Third"

Presented by Steven Kuchuck, LCSW

Even before he speaks, I feel something different as Michael lies down on the couch. “Finally, I have some good dating news”. He’s happy and hopeful and at this point, I am too. But it’s only seconds before my stomach sinks, my heart pounds; I’m grateful for the couch.  Unknowingly, Michael is describing my closest friend. Steven Kuchuck, LCSW, is a psychoanalyst and supervisor in private practice and is the Dean of Training, faculty and supervisor at IEA.  He is the co-editor of the journal Psychoanalytic Perspectives, faculty member at NIP and ICP, former Adjunct Associate Professor at NYU and former Chair of the Trauma Committee of the International Forum for Psychoanalytic Education. Steve is also the author of various articles and book chapters on relational psychoanalysis.

"When Actions Speak Louder than Words: Playing Show and Tell"
Presented by Sally Bjorklund, MA, LMHC

A patient describes herself as “not being there” and says she can’t find me either. She tries to find me by covertly observing me away from the office. I describe how we work to turn her actions into words, becoming two people who can “see” each other.
Sally Bjorklund, MA, LMHC is a psychoanalyst in independent practice in Seattle working with adults, couples and adolescents. She’s interested in postmodern thinking on sexualities, gender and power, and the implication of psychoanalysis in these areas. Sally is an experienced teacher, supervisor and lecturer, a former faculty member at the Northwest Center for Psychoanalysis and currently involved in a new project to create a certificate program in relational psychoanalysis and psychotherapy.

Discussant: Hillary Grill, LCSW, psa. in private practice, faculty; IEA, Submissions Editor Psychoanalytic Perspectives, author of book "Dreaming for Two: The Hidden Emotional Life of Expectant Mothers" and “Bob Dylan's Self-States: A Wild Analysis” in Psa. Perspectives, 7.2.

Micheline CharpieIt is with profound sadness that we inform you of the tragic death of ourcolleague and friend Micheline Charpie, MD, MA, LCAT. She died in an apartment fire while visiting a friend in Paris on January 4th. Micheline was a recent graduate of IEA and a vital member of our community.

In addition to serving as student representative for the past several years, Micheline was involved in all aspects of life at IEA, presenting workshops, serving on committees and working with patients in serious need. Micheline was a close colleague and a dear friend to many IEA students and members.

In her work, Micheline brought to life to the spirit of Expressive Therapy that guides our Institute. She was fearless in taking on the most challenging patients: tiny pre-mature infants, traumatized teens and suicidal adults. Micheline was determined to reach her patients and to use any means necessary to make contact. Her ever-expanding repertoire of interventions included lullaby, cooking and instant messaging. Her passion for her work, her devotion to her patients and her confidence in her method continue to be an inspiration to us all.

In addition to her private practice, Micheline was the NICU music therapist of The Louis Armstrong Center for Music and Medicine at Roosevelt Hospital. She received her MD from the Lausanne, Switzerland, Medical School and trained in neonatology. She also holds a PhD in medicine and is a board certified pediatrician. Micheline was an Assistant Professor for Children and Adolescent Gynecology at Lausanne University Hospital. Upon moving to the United States, Dr. Charpie received an MA in Music Therapy from NYU. She trained in NICU Music Therapy at Beth Israel Medical Center.  She is survived by her four children Thomas 24; Timothée 23; Anne-Camille 20 and Maëlle-Charlotte 19.

A service for family, friends and colleagues was held on January 26th at
St. Lukes Roosevelt Hospital
